Forget the Strawberries and Creme sandwich, Tesco ups M&S with a ‘Birthday Cake’ sandwich

Following M&S’ Strawberries and Creme sandwich, Tesco has hopped on the sweet filling train and launched their own ‘Birthday Cake Sandwich’.

After touring two Tesco’s, an Extra and an Express, the Birthday Cake sandwich was nowhere to be found. The Beef & Horseradish ticket next door was stocked full, so it wasn’t a stock issue. At 7:45am, I hope the empty shelf wasn’t the result of a buying frenzy.

With a jam and cream filling with hundreds and thousands, Tesco’s limited edition sandwich can be found in the meal deal section. Get it on its own for £3, or with a drink and a snack for £4 (£3.60 with a Clubcard).

While we’re on the topic of price, it comes as no surprise that Tesco’s novelty sandwich is cheaper than the one from M&S, which, as we need to remember, was only one half of a sandwich. For 20 pence less, you can get an extra sandwich half, plus sprinkles, but how much does cost weigh in when it comes to a sweet sandwich? Flavour – that’s what people want. As we couldn’t find one, we can’t comment on flavour, but we do know that the M&S one set a high bar.

Like the M&S sandwich, it’s made with brioche-style bread, but the fillings differ, with Tesco’s containing sweetened cream cheese icing, strawberry jam, and sprinkles.

Unfortunately for our diabetic readers, each Birthday Cake sandwich contains 31.5g of sugar. Ooof. As you’d expect with brioche bread, the carb count is also high at 81. 9g per sandwich.

Now, though, it’s a waiting game to see which other supermarkets join in with the novelty sweet sandwiches. Our money is on Aldi, the OG M&S challenger with their Cuthbert caterpillar cake.
