Fox’s Party Rings Celebration Cake: We try it out

Foxs party ring cake being held

Chances are, every birthday party you’ve been to since the 1980s has had a paper plate filled with Party Rings on the buffet table.

Now, 42 years since Fox’s sent their little round biscuits into the world, the brand have entered the cake market with the new Party Rings Celebration Cake.

At the time of writing, you can only buy the Party Rings Cake in Tesco, with it expected to hit the shelves in Asda at some point this month and Sainsbury’s on the 8th of October.

Good thing us Simple and Homely folk are Tesco shoppers! Cherie, after hearing of the launch, jumped onto the Tesco Groceries website and couldn’t find it. However, while on my evening yellow sticker hunt at Big Tesco, I had a look down the cake aisle. It was an easy find – right on the shelf with the other celebration and birthday cakes, unlike the Tesco Birthday Cake sandwich which was nowhere to be found on the meal deal shelf.

I did wince at the price: £14! Fox’s claim the cake contains 10 servings, making each slice £1.40. For that money, we’re really hoping it’s worth it.

All of the cakes come in the same colour, copying the purple Party Ring. The icing was simply referred to as “colourful” on the box, which meant we had to try it to work out exactly what type of icing it was. If the cakes sell well, we can hope that Fox’s expand the range to include some of the other colours.

What did the Party Rings Celebration Cake taste like?

That mystery “colourful icing”? It was royal icing. And, it was soft and very, very nice. Addictive, you could say.

Separating the madeira cakes was a yellow, sweet frosting filling. Also, very nice.

All three together: the madeira, the sweet frosting, and the royal icing? A winning combo.

As you can see, the cake was missing its centre, much like a normal Party Ring. But Fox’s made sure it made up for that missing piece in height. We sliced our test pieces into thick wedges (think: Trivial Pursuits cheese), throwing the “10 slice” serving recommendation into question. To get 10 slices, you’d have to be far less generous.

One of our taste testers wanted their first slice with cream, but after slicing and inspecting, decided it was moist enough to eat without. The Party Rings Celebration Cake wasn’t in the slightest bit dry, no tea to wash it down was needed.

On the sugar-content front, it’s bad news for the diabetics, mind you. Each slice contains 40.7g of carbohydrates, of which 29.4g is sugar. Our diabetics will need to adjust their insulin doses accordingly.
