It was only a matter of time until another supermarket joined in with the limited edition sweet sandwich trend, and this time, it’s Aldi with their Cake Sandwich. The name isn’t overly creative, but it tells you all you need to know: it’s a sandwich… made of cake.
Back at the start of summer, M&S started the trend with their well-received Strawberries and Creme sandwich. It cost around £3.20 for one triangle of brioche bread, filled with a sweetened cream cheese filling with fresh strawberries.
Slightly later in the summer, Tesco were the first to hop on the trend with their Birthday Cake sandwich. Unlike Aldi, who’ve launched their cake sandwich in the bakery section, Tesco sold theirs as an extra option for their lunchtime meal deal.
It beats all competition on price: M&S sold half a sandwich for around £3.20, Tesco sold two halves for £3 (if you bought it separate to a meal deal), and Aldi is selling two halves for £1.99.
What do you get for your £1.99?
Well, you get two slices of crumbly vanilla sponge sandwiched together, filled with a vanilla buttercream which has been scattered with rainbow sprinkles, then cut into triangles.
Each half is separated in the packet by a plastic barrier. Each half is its own serving, containing 246kcal per triangle.
Aldi UK’s chief commercial officer, Julie Ashfield, commented: “The nation made it clear: cake beats crusts every time. We’ve taken the hint and delivered exactly what shoppers have asked for.
“True to form, our Cake Sandwich is simple yet delicious — creating the perfect pick-me-up treat that truly delivers.”
How much sugar is in it?
Quite a lot, as you’d expect for something containing icing and sprinkles. This isn’t one for our diabetic readers: each serving contains 35g of carbohydrates, 25g of which are sugar.
The ingredients list contained a lot of things we didn’t know, so if you’re particularly interested in avoiding processed food, you’d be better off making your own.
What did we think of it?
We rated it 5/10. Two people tasted it; one wouldn’t buy it again, citing that it made her teeth feel weird, and the other would buy it again, having enjoyed her half.
The sponge itself was crumbly, and even with the buttercream filling, had an overall dryness to it. But, for £1.99, we weren’t expecting M&S quality.
Find it in the bakery section for a limited-time only.
