Supermarkets cut Christmas vegetable prices down to 5p

Holding two carrots and two potatoes in a kitchen

Yesterday, the 18th of December, three major UK supermarkets cut the prices of their Christmas vegetables in a bid to win customers from competitors.

The slashing of vegetable prices this close to Christmas is an annual occurrence, with each supermarket looking to undercut the King of Cheap, Aldi.

Morrisons led the charge by knocking the price of four popular Christmas dinner staples down to 5p each. Aldi was the one to price match this time, taking their already bargain 8p Super Six down to 5p as well. The only difference is, at Morrisons, you need to be a holder of their loyalty card.

With a More Card, you can expect to pay 5p each for a kilo of carrots, a whole swede, 500g of parsnips, and 500g of brussel sprouts until the 26th of December. You’re limited to six items per person, however, which is a good move in the fight of preventing food waste.

Another date to note: on the 21st and 22nd of December, Morrisons is also giving away wonky carrots to children so they can leave one out Santa’s reindeer when he stops by to deliver their gifts.

It isn’t just Morrisons cutting vegetable prices, so below, I’ll cover which supermarket is getting in on the vegetable price wars, how long each promotion lasts, and what’s on offer.

Aldi – 5p

In a return of the Super Six, Aldi cut prices to 8p. After Morrisons undercut them by 3p, Aldi dropped their prices to match. So, for 5p each, you can get:

  • 2kg white potatoes
  • 1kg carrots
  • 500g parsnips
  • Whole swede
  • Red or white cabbage

The promotion ends on the 24th December.

Lidl – 5p

Like Morrisons and Aldi, Lidl have also cut prices to 5p. Like Aldi, the offer also runs out on Christmas eve.

What veg is included?

  • 300g shallots
  • 2kg white potatoes
  • Whole swede
  • 500g brussel sprouts
  • 1kg carrots
  • 500g parsnips

Tesco – 15p (with a Clubcard)

Tesco isn’t letting just anyone have reduced veg this Christmas, only the people who took 10 seconds to apply for a Clubcard. Clubcard holders are treated to seven offers on vegetables, including:

  • Red cabbage
  • 500g brussel sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Whole swede
  • 2kg potatoes
  • 500g parsnips
  • 1kg carrots

If you want to get your vegetables delivered, the offer is valid until the 25th.

Sainsburys – 15p (with Nectar)

It’s another 15p vegetable offer. Sainsbury’s nor Tesco have managed to cut their prices as low as the 5p leaders, but if you’re already shopping at either of them then it’s a good deal to take advantage of while you’re there.

With a Nectar card, you can buy the following for 15p:

  • 2kg potatoes
  • 1kg carrots
  • 500g brussel sprouts
  • 500g parsnips
  • Whole swede
  • Red or white cabbage

You’ve got until Christmas eve to make the most of the prices, as they’ll return to normal on Christmas day.

Whichever shop you choose to buy your vegetables at, be aware that some have placed limits on the number you can buy at any one time.

If you were planning to stock up on veg for the months ahead by ingredient prepping and freezing, be sure to pick a supermarket which doesn’t have a limit in place.
