The famous Matilda chocolate cake has some flavour revamps

2–3 minutes

The Matilda cake has been around for a hot minute at Tesco, but it’s not just Cook’s sticky chocolate fudge cake on the shelves.

Made by Studio Bakery, a family owned brand in Clitheroe, the Matilda cake and sweet treat range takes inspiration from, you guessed it, Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Those with fond memories of reading or watching the scene where Bruce Bogtrotter is forced to stuff down a massive, sickly, fudgey chocolate cake containing Cook’s “sweat and blood” will know the cake well.

Unfortunately, Tesco is only selling Studio Bakery’s slice portions, but each contains a whopping 24 layers, so we reckon one slice is more than enough.

If you do want the whole thing, however, you can head to Studio Bakery directly and drop £130 on “the entire confection”. As Miss Trunchbull called it.

As we said above, Studio Bakery has only taken inspiration from Matilda, meaning chocolate fudge isn’t the only flavour combination available. On the supermarket shelves, we’ve seen a couple of different options available. Let’s take a look:

What Maltida-inspired cakes are available to buy?

Chocolate Matilda Cake

For £16, you get one ginormous chunk of cake inspired by Miss Trunchball’s love for Cook’s chocolate cake. This 24-layer chocolate cake is coated with chocolate ganache, with even more separating the layers. Each slice is enough to feed 10, apparently.

As our sugar-free readers would expect, this cake is packed full of sugar; each portion contains around 26.3 grams’ worth.

The Chocolate Matilda Cake is available at a range of supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose, and sometimes Asda.

The Matilda – Cookies & Cream Limited Edition

The Cookies and Cream limited edition flavour combo will also cost you £16 for 24 layers. However, this time you get dark chocolate ganache and white chocolate fudge between the layers with the whole shebang covered with a vanilla buttercream and crushed cookies and cream biscuits. Oreos, to you and me.

Diabetics will look at the nutritional information and weep, for each portion packs in 38.7g of sugar.

Matilda and Friends Cake

It’s another £16 option: three smaller slices of cake in three different flavours. You get the original, a cookies and cream, and a caramelised biscuit slice.

Between the three slices, the packaging claims you’ll be able to serve 10 people. The amount of sugar per portion is dependent on which flavour you go for, but plan for an average of 32g.

Matilda Bites and Bobs Easter Selection Tin

Of all the options on the list, the Matilda Bites and Bobs tin is the only one we bought and tried.

It cost me £10 (at least the tin can be repurposed for random batteries) and it contained a selection of Easter-themed nibbles, such as chocolate nests, chocolate brownies, chocolate millionaire shortbread, mini eggs, and various sweets.

I roped in a collection of adults and teenagers to share their opinions on the individual bites and bobs, and overall, we rate it a 7/10. It would better suit kids at an Easter gathering or egg hunt than adults, but we found the treats were nice and tasted good. Although, we’re not sure we’d pay £10 for it again.
